Stuttgart State Theater in Germany opens in-house laundry room
Werner Pick, Costume Director,at the Stuttgart State Theater, says the theater has a lot of different costumes made of a large variety of textiles, such as hand painted and hand dyed fabrics, delicate ballet tricots with beads and sequence, cashmere shirts, etc. "After performances the costumes need to be cleaned. Until now we had our costumes sent out, but we were not completely satisfied with the cleaning and the waiting time," says Mr. Pick. "That is why we invested in an in-house laundry room equipped with Miele machines."
Since installing Miele washers and dryers, the theater has been able to do all washing in-house and has experienced considerable savings. The theater owns about 120,000 garments all together. Performances are taking place daily and about 150 costumes are washed every day. Besides costumes, there is the daily washing of 3,000 towels and tablecloths. The machines are running non-stop every day from 7am to 11pm.
"The make up and fake blood on costumes require special treatment, the delicate sequence and beads on the ballet tricots need special care. We have had bad experiences with dry cleaning. Colors on the costumes turned gray and beads came off," says Mr. Pick. "Since installing the Miele washers and dryers, we have been very pleased. The Wet Cleaning is a success," says Mr. Pick.
"It would usually take a lot of work and effort to get the fake bloodstains out of the costumes. The red color wouldn't come out all the way. It would leave a pink spot on the clothes," comments the costume director. Now, with the Miele machines and a special detergent, the Stuttgart Theater has been able to proof their costumes. This prevents the fake blood, perspiration and humidity from being absorbed into the fabric. Plus, it simplifies the cleaning process and saves time.
